Art, Architecture & Archeology

Things are often related to each other, and to look at an object, it needs to be disassociated, it needs to be decontextualised. Js
Autonomy(self-governance) as a tool could be used.
Art, archaeology and architecture grew together but are not the same in history.
In terms of archaeology- James Furgeurson says, “Archaeology is not architecture, and this leads to question the commonality between art and architecture”
Understanding Art & Architecture
To understand the division, we need to understand what art really is.
If an object satisfies human needs it is mechanical.
If it derives from pleasure, to satisfy certain needs, it’s art.
Eg- Having the basic need for food is mechanical whereas having a choice of cuisine makes it art.
Art
By understanding this we can propose style becomes the predominant way of classifying not topology (space).
Nature is often the source of art and imitation of nature not as if you are copying as is but representing it as certain traits and emphasising them out of proportion making them so beautiful and so perfect that they cannot be found in nature makes it art.
Architecture
Architecture is not art because of the following reasons.
The form is dependent on the desire of the architect and are arbitrary.
Architecture always has specific ends making this adequate, a need, mechanical
The gray
Landscape emerges as a painting can be a 2-dimensional picture. Landscapes are considered painting because unlike architecture it has no use other than pleasure.
When a painting is looked upon, the painter does not paint to design form but ways of seeing.
Within landscapes, architecture form is meant to break down the monotony of nature.
Within this also, architecture emphasises the trees, rocks, and natural elements but it still is at the basic level as it deals with the needs.
Can architecture be art?
Art movements like the renaissance, or Gothic brought ornamentation into architecture.
To understand an architectural object like a painting you need to move far to see the totality, but you lose out on details and onwards you loose in the form.
How can architecture bring empathy?
Empathy was a state of pleasure along with the idea of mutual belonging
Carl Botiture wrote about architectural tectonics. “It is the tectonics that gives the form”
Sensible truths — ideas into form that occupy space that can be touched
Sensible arts — don’t have a physical reality
How can we experience architecture then like a painting — spatial
To experience the depth that paintings don’t have we need to move through it. Architects should start to design space, but asking what bodily experience can provide human body motion should be the centre while designing. And this motion cannot be the motion of a soldier but an inquisitive mind,
The idea of a unitary city has ended now it’s a larger urban form, (greater Hyderabad corporation)
What is left of a city is the columns and beams and what an architect has to do is design an envelope and interiors — what is the role left by an architect?
